March 2008 Newsletter Phnom Penh Trip At the end of February the children and staff of Rainbow House took a trip together to Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capitol four hours north of Sihanoukville! The children had never been to a big city before and were impressed by the size, noise, and speed of everything they saw. They spent three days exploring all the sights the city has to offer. Highlights included seeing the monkeys at Wat Phnom, riding the escalators at the large Sorya Shopping center and splashing down the water slides at the Phnom Penh Water Park. The children also visited the National Museum to see ancient Khmer artwork and the Tuol Sleng Museum to learn more about Cambodia’s history in the last forty years, saw the Independence Monument lit up at night on a tuk-tuk tour of the city and walked along the city’s bustling river front by the Royal Palace. Everyone had a great time and came back with lots of stories to tell their school friends. Rainbow Foundation Shop At the beginning of March Rainbow Foundation opened The Rainbow Shop! This small business will put 100% of its profits back into Rainbow Foundation to make us more financially self-sufficient so that we can continue to grow and expand our programs. Besides raising money for the Foundation, this shop will help raise awareness and spread information about Rainbow Foundation to the many tourists passing through Cambodia. Here they can find out how they can get involved and help the children of Rainbow House. This shop will sell Rainbow Tees, new and second hand traveler clothing, books and accessories in the center of tourist activity in Sihanoukville. Other News Joining Teacher Malin as part of our Khmer Volunteer Team is Teacher Kuntia. Many of the children in Rainbow House have missed years of Khmer schooling prior to living in our home. Teacher Kuntia works with the children on any areas in which they are behind, from learning Khmer script to math and reading. She comes to Rainbow House every day and gives lessons to all of our children. Rainbow is currently seeking a new home. We would like to purchase land and build a new home for the children. Owning our own home would mean we would no longer have to pay rent, a fast growing expense in Cambodia, and that we would be able to provide a secure, stable, long-term home for many generations of children to come. We could also design the ideal space for the children with a larger sports area, a computer lab and classroom space. Thanks to a generous pledge, we are getting closer to our goal of purchasing land; however we still have a long way to go. We are seeking more support for this project. If you are interested in helping us fundraise for this project, please contact Glenna Brown or Kate Morello at Rainbow Foundation, rainbowcambodia@yahoo.com. Thank you. |
